Tēnā koutou e te whānau

I would like to tautoko our Chair’s comments that it was wonderful to meet with iwi members and whānau over the past two weekends to update you on the progress that has been made over the past year, and to tell you of future activities we have planned. The feedback and comments will assist us to continue to move forward on your behalf.

One of the topics we covered was research and over the next 12 months we will be undertaking an extensive research programme covering a range of topics. This will allow us to better understand our iwi, our members and what is important to you, so that we can continue to build our future strategies in line with the aspirations of iwi members.

If you are contacted by the researchers I urge you to participate and offer your thoughts and ideas. Your comments will be a valuable source of knowledge for us and will aid in the planning that will be needed by both the Board and the office to achieve the goals of the Strategic Plan.

The year is well and truly underway and we are busy planning for what will be a very busy next 12 months. Kiley is currently finalising the wānanga schedule for the year and we will soon be advising you of the dates for these. If you have not attended wānanga yet I recommend you put the time aside to do so. It is a great opportunity to learn more about your iwi and our special places and to meet with whānau to discover or renew your whakapapa connections.

We are also currently developing an environmental strategy to cover a number of areas of what is a vast and important topic for our iwi. Freshwater (wai māori), native timbers, RMA, marine and coastal areas, local councils, statutory acknowledgements and Crown agencies are just some of the topics we need to address and develop a position on. As part of the project we will be looking for iwi members who have an interest, background or skills in the various areas to assist us to complete the strategy, more information will follow on this soon.

Good News and Success Stories. We love good news and to hear of the successes of our iwi members. Many of our iwi members are achieving in sport, business, the arts or in the community and we want to share this good news, so please, if someone in your whānau has recently achieved or excelled in their chosen field let us know so we can all celebrate their success.

Kia pai tō rā
